BLOG ACTION DAY 2009: Bangkok Summary, Facebook Groups

You might not know it, but today it is BLOG ACTION DAY 2009 and in this year the theme for the whole of the day it is CLIMATE CHANGE. So I am very supporting of this idea, and everyone should go to there and read all the good messages. And I will be reading later, and I will be trying to give you some good links here, later.

And also if you are on FACEBOOK, there are some very good groups that you should join for Climate Change:

Now for the summary of the latest UNFCCC Meeting in Bangkok:

[[[ I am sorry if this is late for you... but I did want to wait for this Blog Action Day. ]]]

The meeting it was from 28 September to 9 October, nearly the last meeting before the agreements must be made in Copenhagen in December.

It is bad news. Still everything is VERY SLOW, and some reports say the most likely outcome in Copenhage is a WEAK or NO DEAL.

The rich countrys do not agree, and the poor countrys are feeling that there is no help. There is no agreement on moneys to pay for helping the poor developing countrys to reduce there emissions. Also no agreement on the emission reductions for partway through the agreement, although earlier some countrys have agreed to 80% reduction by 2050, but that is a long way away and it is not enough to make action immediately.

But there is one small flicker of the light at the end of the tunnel, because the very very long paper which was written in Bonn has been cut by half. So at least something is happening.

It is very very important not to stop now. We must not give up, and we must all tell our governments to make sure that there is a GOOD deal, and MEANINGFUL TARGETS agreed in Copenhagen.

UNFCCC Meeting, Bonn, 10 - 14 August

The negotiating text of 200 pages was supposed to be cut down, consolidated, agreed. Progress is slow - even the UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de Beor admitting that is TOO SLOW for good agreement in Copenhagen.

There is no agreement on funding - no moneys agreed for supporting the developing countrys in they're part against climate change. And targets against carbon emissions are not good, there is not agreed a good level of reduction in emisions to save the planet.

Noone wants to pay, and noone wants to take the responsibility, but if we do nothing then nothing will happen!!!

How we can get from this point to complete agreement in time in Copenhagen, this December?

Members of the G8 meeting this week, in L'Aquila Italy. The G8 Summit will be talking Climate Change... maybe it helps, maybe not.

Sadly, there is no Muslim countrys in G8 to represent us.

UNFCCC meeting in Bonn was 1 - 12 June. And this Bonn talks included the second major session this year on a strengthened international climate change agreement to be finalized in December 2009 in Copenhagen... but not going well. TOO SLOW.

Writing up from wikipedia:

Delegates from 183 countries met in Bonn from 1 to 12 June 2009. The purpose was to discuss key negotiating texts. These will serve as the basis for the international climate change agreement at Copenhagen. At the conclusion the AWG-KP negotiating group was still far away from the emission reduction range that has been set out by science to avoid the worst ravages of climate change: a minus 25% to minus 40% reduction below 1990 levels by 2020. The AWG-KP still needs to decide on the aggregate emission reduction target for industrialised countries, along with individual targets for each country. Progress was made in gaining clarification of the issues of concern to parties and including these concerns in the updated draft of the negotiating text.

This is not fast progress. And the Muslim world must be taking a lead in pushing for more progress, faster progress, at future talks.

There is no second chance. Targets they must be agreed, and must be good targets.

UNFCCC Meeting, Bonn, 29 March to 8 April

In Bonn, was first of five planned negotiating sessions before COP 15 in Copenhagen in December. This was seventh session of the AWG-KP and fifth session of the AWG-LCA (two groups in the UNFCCC).

This was first round of discussion about the agreement for Copenhagen, and discussion of targets for the developed countrys, and what support to developing countries (in money and technology).

After Kyoto

This new blog about climate change at end of the Kyoto Protocol. the Kyoto Protocol ends soon (2012), and the meetings happening right now to decide "what next?", and the Muslim world must lead to make the good agreements, and the good decisions to take care of the whole world.

For more info about the Kyoto Protocol you can read in Arabic, and French, and English... even Spanish, Chinese, Russian if you want to! And look at all the Muslim countries having ratified Kyoto, while USA have not:
